Alex started his show career
aboard Erins Copper Image. Jack taught Alex a lot
about showing and how to accept hardship as he went blind
from glaucoma and
now keeps everyone in line at home. So a
new pony needed to be found. Thanks to
Larry and Crystal Myers, Alex’s next
partner was just a few hours from home in
Nevada, Iowa.
Doc’s Double Scoop had been
Craig Dammen’s youth mount and knew all
about showing. She taught Alex about
games and costumes as well as making
round circles in patterns. She has a very
special place in all of our families’ hearts.
She moved on to teach another young child
the joys of showing and competing.
During the same time Alex’s next mount was competing
in the JPFC
classes. Montes Totough Tobounce joined our family after
winning the weanling
filly class at the International. She then spent several
years with Nikki Ferwerda
learning how to be a show horse. Alex started riding
her at the end of her three
year old year as he was finishing up as an 8 & under.
Tootie and Alex have
grown into a true team. They have learned how to be patient
with each other and
have gone on to win the 9-12 Boys International High
Point for the past two
years. They finished this year with the National High
Point 9-12 Equitation
award and Top Ten Pony.
This year has had its highs and lows. The wins were
great fun and over
coming Tootie’s broken forehead and Alex’s
broken wrist after the Regional in
Texas caused them to practice patience as
they were both on strict rest for almost
two months. After both healed, they
headed right back to showing without
missing a beat.
This year would not have been possible
without the support and friendship of so
many people. First and foremost, Ann
Gillentine who taught Alex to jump as
well as took care of the farm when we
were gone. Dr. Mike Black and his team
at Nebraska Equine who took such good care of Tootie
after she was injured.
Larry and Crystal Myers who were always there to lend
a helping hand and Nikki
Ferwerda who helped create this great show mare, and
worked with Alex to refine
what he and Tootie had learned.
Thank you to all the competitors this year and we look
forward to seeing
you all on the road in 2007.
