The thought of going to horse shows without a saddle was not appealing, to say the least. However, I only had a yearling to show in 2004, so we needed to find a riding prospect. We heard that Julie Szilagyi had a coming 2 year old Silver Kid colt for sale, and we knew that we needed to look at him. “Awesome” was a fuzzy, gawky, little colt, but he had a sweet personality, kind eyes, and he could lope a hole in the ground. He came home with us in the spring, and we quickly realized that we got a good one.

Looking Awesome in Silver made his show debut in the 19-34 classes of a tough open show circuit as the only pony and only 2 year old. It didn’t take this little pony (52” on a “tall” day) long to earn the respect of the “big guys” by placing at the top of the pleasure and trail classes, nailing every equitation pattern, and winning multiple high point awards. He did well at POA shows too; he placed in all three 2y/o JPFC classes at the International and International Futurity.

Meanwhile, CN Spot Me Some Silver (“Annie”) was being shown in halter, showmanship, longe line, and in hand trail at open and POA shows. Just like her siblings, she was extremely smart and talented. She also showed that she was just as tough in the show ring by winning Yearling In Hand Trail at the MidEast Regional and International, and she was 4th at the International Futurity. She won her first showmanship class and consistently placed well in long line.

Awesome came out bigger (53”+) and better as a 3 year old, and we couldn’t have been more pleased with him. At the 2005 International, he was High Point JPFC 3&4 y/o with a win in Western Pleasure, 2nd in Trail, and 4th in English Pleasure. He won both 3 y/o pleasure classes at the MidEast Futurity and placed well at the International Futurity. We could tell that Awesome wanted his own kid, and we knew that he was ready for one. In Des Moines, 6 y/o Grace Reiners got on, and we knew right away that they were perfect for each other. We are very excited to see this team in action this summer.

Annie showed to be just as competitive under saddle as she was on the ground, and she also had a great summer. She started out winning High Point JPFC 2 y/o at the MidEast Regional as well as Open Sweepstakes Showmanship. She placed well in all three 2 y/o classes at the International, and she won both 2 y/o pleasure classes at the MidEast Futurity.

This May I’ll be graduating with my Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Hopefully my new job will allow me to continue riding and showing such wonderful ponies. It’s been a great ride, but I’m not ready to unsaddle yet.
